Flamingo chicks receive a health check!
It’s International Flamingo Day and we’ve got an update for you on the Zoo’s flamingo chicks!
Recently bird keepers Sarah and Letitia performed quick health checks on each chick, to ensure they’re looking healthy and developing well. This is part of the science of care we provide all of the animals at the Zoo as part of the five domains of animal welfare model.
The Flamingo Specialist Group created this day to raise awareness for flamingo globally. The greater flamingo we have at Auckland Zoo have a conservation threat status of ‘least concern’ but four of the world’s six flamingo species are currently threatened.

So do big cats need specific organs like intestines, liver, bones, stuff like that? If so how do you meet specific dietary requirements of different species and at different growth stages? Do you need to supplement vitamins into their food or not?
Kia ora, yes big cats do require organs for their specific dietary requirements. Along with other zoos across Australasia we provide a big cat supplement on their diets which has been scientifically formulated to contain the specific nutrients big cats need. Our carnivore keepers also provide the Zoo’s large cats with organ meat such as heart, liver and kidneys, on top of the bone and hide within their daily diets. :)
I visited the zoo for the first time in years and I was blown away at all of the upgrades. The enclosures look so cool and it flows so nicely. The gharials and swamp forest was one of the highlights for me. Such a cool looking addition and the swamp dome was so lush
Lemurs and peacocks are a great combination. This makes me happy
